Cultivating a Greener College Experience
As a recent high school graduate, I’m about to embark on the exciting journey of living independently for the first time. And with this newfound freedom comes a unique opportunity – the chance to curate a more sustainable lifestyle from the ground up.
You see, I’ve long admired the eco-friendly influencers I see online, but felt hindered by the constraints of my family’s home environment. Now, with my college dorm as a blank canvas, I’m determined to transform my sustainable dreams into reality. No more excuses – it’s time to put my money where my (environmentally-conscious) mouth is.
The thing is, starting college is a fresh start for many of us. We’re not weighed down by years of accumulated “stuff” like our parents. Instead, we get to build our own version of the perfect living space, armed with only the essentials. And that, my friends, is both a blessing and an opportunity.
Because let’s be honest – our consumeristic society has a way of luring us down the rabbit hole of cheap, disposable decor and unnecessary “necessities.” From plastics that will never break down to harmful chemicals, the waste we accumulate is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much more waste embedded in the production and acquisition of these materials.
Reframing the College Shopping List
But what if we reframed our college shopping list? What if, instead of mindlessly adding things to our carts, we focused on buying only what we truly need – and doing so in the most eco-friendly way possible?
Buying less, buying better, and buying things that will last – for both ourselves and the planet. That’s the sustainable dream I’m aiming for. And I’m here to share my research and findings to help you do the same.
Reuse, Repurpose, and Upcycle
Before you even think about buying anything new, take a good look around. Chances are, you’ve already got a treasure trove of reusable items just waiting to be repurposed. After all, new doesn’t always mean better.
Think about it – those old sheets can easily be transformed into a cozy new duvet cover. That tattered t-shirt could become a set of handy cleaning rags. And those beat-up storage bins? Perfect for organizing your closet or stashing extra linens.
Upcycling is another fantastic way to give new life to old items. With a little creativity, you can turn that worn-out curtain into stylish drapery, or transform an old backpack with some fabric dye. The possibilities are endless!
The Secondhand Advantage
Of course, there are some things you’ll inevitably need to buy new. But even then, you can minimize your environmental impact by scouring the secondhand market.
Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online platforms like eBay and Poshmark are treasure troves of gently used items – from clothing and bedding to decor and tech. Not only are you giving these products a second life, but you’re also supporting a circular economy.
And when it comes to textbooks and electronics, buying refurbished or used is an absolute no-brainer. You’ll save a bundle while keeping perfectly good products out of the landfill.
Seeking Out Sustainability
Of course, there are some things you’ll need to buy brand new. And when that’s the case, it’s crucial to seek out the most sustainable and ethical options available.
Look for companies with third-party certifications like B Corp, Climate Neutral, and 1% for the Planet. These seals of approval indicate a genuine commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
Additionally, pay close attention to a brand’s transparency and the materials they use. Organic, natural fibers like cotton are generally preferable to synthetic options like polyester. And companies that are upfront about their sustainability efforts and goals are more likely to be walking the walk, not just talking the talk.
Eco-Friendly Essentials for Every Room
With these principles in mind, let’s dive into some of my top sustainable swaps for outfitting your dorm room. From the bedroom to the bathroom and beyond, these easy eco-friendly alternatives will have you feeling good about your choices.
Bedroom
When it comes to the bedroom, I’m all about the Avocado Green Mattress for a comfortable and sustainable sleep. And for bedding, you can’t go wrong with the upcycled quilts and comforters from Anchal.
Clothing
For ethical, eco-friendly fashion, I’m a big fan of brands like Patagonia, Allbirds, and Conscious Step. And you can’t beat the comfort and sustainability of Vegan Birkenstocks.
Tech and Accessories
When it comes to tech and accessories, I’m all about Pela Case for eco-friendly phone and AirPods cases. And for refurbished electronics, you can’t go wrong with the selection at eBay.
Bathroom
In the bathroom, I’m loyal to brands like Lush, Ethique, and Package Free Shop for eco-friendly soaps, shampoos, and more. And for a sustainable shave, the Leaf Razor is a game-changer.
School Supplies
When it comes to school supplies, I’m all about Pilot’s refillable pens and the beautiful, sustainably-made notebooks from Dingbats. And for textbooks, you can’t beat the savings (and environmental impact) of buying used.
A Greener Future, One Swap at a Time
At the end of the day, going green doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. Small changes can make a big difference, and the more we normalize sustainable habits, the easier it becomes.
So as you gear up for your college adventure, I challenge you to approach your dorm room shopping with a critical eye. What do you truly need? What eco-friendly alternatives are out there? With a little creativity and determination, you can create a space that’s as kind to the planet as it is to your wallet and your personal style.
After all, this is our chance to set the tone for the rest of our lives. Why not make it a sustainable one?
